The pieces of fried meat was on the table. I was pretty sure that they were chicken. The inner flesh color is white and the outside is golden brown. The golden brown color was due to frying. I was wondering why there was no chicken skins. There should be some but all are gone. There are no legs too. Perhaps someone had already got them. Chicken skin is one of the most flavorful part of fried meat. I was looking for it but someone was ahead of me.
Anyway, eating with fried chicken is really enjoyable especially the native chicken. It is very tasty.
After finishing my meal, I asked mom where did she get the native chicken. I really prefer native over the commercially grown 45-days old broilers (now 35 and younger). Mom replied that it was not a native chicken, it was bayawak meat. I would never ate eat it I discovered earlier.
Monitor lizard or bayawak is common in our province. Some alcohol drinkers are hunting for this species for pulutan in drinking session. They are saying that its meat is like chicken’s and more delicious than chicken’s. I disagreed cause monitor lizard are able to eat decomposing animal tissues. I never wanted to eat it anyway – the meat of unclean animals.
I never thought that bayawak meat really taste good.
However, I never recommend eating monitor lizard. It is unlawful under the Republic Act NO. 9147, An Act Providing for the Conservation and Protection of Wildlife Resources and their Habitats, Appropriating Funds and Therefor and for Other Purposes.
Section 27. Illegal Acts. Unless otherwise allowed in accordance with this Act, it shall be unlawful for any person to willfully and knowingly exploit wildlife resources and their habitat…
