Ampalaya is Bitter Because of Alkaloid Momordicine

Do you eat ampalaya? If your answer is yes then your one of the lucky guys. If your answer is no then you are still lucky but not as lucky as bitter melon eaters.

I never ate ampalaya before. Thanks to my former professor and to her for forcing me and teaching me how to eat it. I can eat thin ampalaya slices when mixed with other vegetables and rice. Though I cannot eat raw ampalaya and large slices yet. I envy those who can. I wish I could do it to.

Ampalaya also known as bitter melon and with a scientific name of Momordica charantia. It is bitter cause it has a type of alkaloid called Momordicine. The substance can be found in fruit, seeds,leaves, and stems. If you are a bitter hater, then you cannot eat all four parts.

The scientific name Momordica charantia when separated are famous name of health supplements. Who among you never know the “Charantia 500 mg all natural ampalaya capsules. Diabetic individuals who cannot withstand bitterness often opt for this or other supplements.

The word momordicine and momordica sound the same. Indeed cause the genus momoridica was derived from from the latter. Momordicine is a popular food supplement for diabetic. Some say it is a propriety formulation but the probability that they extracted it from ampalaya is high.

So the next time you eat ampalaya. Never asked why it is  bitter nor complain that it is indeed bitter. You should thanks that it is bitter! It is not ampalaya if we take out the bitter momordicine.
