How To Keep Ants Away From Your Foods

It was already  2 pm and I have never eaten my lunch yet. Writing articles, doing experiments, researching and taking care of our toddler are never easy. Thank God, he was asleep and I could eat my delayed lunch. I was really hungry.

I opened the pot (kaldero) and saw the numerous black ants crawling over the rice. They were so busy getting my food. Daig ng maagap and masipag, ika nga! It was a good thing they are very small to took it all away.

I tapped the pot vigorously and repeatedly. Ants run away cowardly. All were gone within 30 seconds. Then I ate my lunch as if nothing happened. No time to cook rice replacement.

Anyone should never allow ants to get into foods. Their reputation is not as bad as house flies, cockroaches and rodents but they could be as dirty.

Ants  are very busy creatures, always on the move. They are marching back and for to gather foods  and their 8 legs can harbor harmful microorganisms like E. coli and Salmonella.

Tips to keep them away from your foods:

1) Keep cover tightly closed. This is not always possible for kaldero. It has a small gap in between lid and cover, wide enough for ants to pass through.
2) Place the food container on basin with shallow water. Ants never know how to swim.
3) Use insect repellent chalk. It will kill or drive them away but might cause worse danger.
4) Destroy all nearby ant colonies. We did it several times. They are very intelligent in finding new homes and will come back to get food.
5) Keep the area always clean. Food spills are good ant attractant.
6) Keep all unconsumed food in refrigerator.  This might be the best solution cause they could not enter a cold fridge.
