I can’t remember when was the last time I ate brown rice. I love it cause it smells fragrant and taste yummy. Brown rice is scarce as of date . It was overpowered by very popular white rice.
Brown rice is simply hulled rice. Rice in which only the outermost layer is removed, only the husk. The bran and germ are still intact. Bran is the outer seed layer next to husk while germ is the reproductive part of the seed. The two layers carries most of the rice nutrients. It contains Vitamin B1 (thiamine),Vitamin B2 (riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (niacin), Vitamin B6, Vitamin B9, Vitamin K , Vitamin E and choline. It contains essential nutrients like magnesium, manganese, iron and zinc. Rice has high quality proteins compare to other grains.
Obviously brown rice is a whole grain. Whole grain has been used by Nestle to promote their popular breakfast cereal products.
White rice is produce through polishing of brown rice. Polishing removes the bran and germ leaving only the starchy endosperm. The vitamins and minerals that reside in germ and bran are also removed. Why are they throwing away those valuable nutrients? Bran is a component of feed for animals such pig, cows, horses, chicken and pets. Wow, these animals could be much healthier than us. Some company add back the lost nutrients but it cannot equal the nutritional composition of brown rice. Plus, dietary fibers cannot be added back.
Members of poor families suffers from malnutrition because they can only afford rice plus one viand for their meal. These could be one of the following : instant noodles, sardines or dried fish. How could they get proper nutrition. Well, nutrient rich brown rice would be of great help.
I wish brown rice is readily available on our favorite rice retailers. You? Would like to eat brown rice?
