Food Safety Tips During Floods And Other Calamities

Food safety should  be in list of priorities. But in case of calamities like typhoons and floods, food is the priority. Most of the time, the safety does not matter. How could we think of safety in times of hunger.instant noodles

However, we should think of food safety at all times. Ingesting a dirty food is as bad as not eating at all. Here are some food safety tips courtesy of GMA 7 and National Risk Reduction and Management Council.

1) Store all food in high place to avoid getting reached by flood. Keep it in tightly sealed container as much as possible.

2) Store ready to eat foods and shelf stable foods – no refrigeration needed. Good examples are biscuits, instant noodles, sardines, corned beef and other canned goods.

3) Cooked the food well and protect it from dirt and microbial contamination.

4) Boil all water before drinking – to kill harmful germs.

5) Provide a portable stove and lpg. It will be very useful in case of evacuation.

6) Process your own canned goods before the expected flood or calamity. Own cooking is better cause it contain less chemical preservatives.

7) Keep several containers of clean drinking water. Clean water become scarce during floods.

8) In case you are using wood fire for cooking, packing woods in plastics and keeping them in high places is a good idea.

9) Keep a list of emergency numbers. Keep cellphones always full charge.
