Is Dirty Ice Cream Really Dirty? aka Sorbetes

A man pushing a large container is coming again. He is getting peoples’ attention by ringing his bell. Then children are rushing to side street to buy sorbetes or the so called dirty ice cream.

Sorbetes is a real hit for children. Around five pesos per apa. Add another five pesos and it will become bigger in a plastic cup.

In environmental point of view, the apa should be chosen over the plastic cup. Apa is edible while the latter become garbage after use. Not if all people are responsible enough to do recycling.

Sorbetes is under the umbrella of dirty ice cream. Others are ice buko and ice drop. Why people are calling it dirty. Is dirty ice cream really dirty?

According to my grandfather, it is indeed dirty. The sorbetes vendor walks from barrio to barrio. He still walks even if the sun is shining hot. He is sweating all over and adsorbing dust. He is peeing anywhere whenever he feels doing so – he gonna hold his ____ with bare hands and never wash hands after. Then he gonna scoop out ice cream and give it to his customer. The practice is against the law of food sanitation.

This is just a wild guest: During the invention of sorbetes. People are not aware of proper food hygiene. Sorbetes are being manufactured without the knowledge of food hygiene. Then here comes the large ice cream companies. It is obvious that small but many sorbetes producers are their competitors. The term “dirty ice cream” a form of smear campaign.

Well dirty ice cream are real dirty if a manufacturer process it in a dirty manner.
