Early morning, the sun is still deep asleep. Pot-pot! pot-pot! Then someone will go outside his house in haze. The purpose is to buy some pandesal or pan-americano from a man who is riding on a bike. He is carrying a large bread box on his back and pressing a horn repeatedly. A child is often heard, ” mama the pot-pot is coming”.
Before, bread vendors are only seen in early morning. Now, they can be seen in morning and in afternoon, about 2:30 to 3:30 pm. I often see them passing by within the time frame. They are carrying other bread types other than pandesal and pan-americano. Maybe you noticed it too.
I usually wait for passing bread vendors and buy some bread. But I started to think twice when my sister-in-law told us about the two guys who are smoking cigarette while selling bread.
So what are wrongs about it?
1) Smoking by nature is bad. What more if someone is smoking while selling food products. Maybe it is okay if you are a smoker too.
2) Bread are arranged in a large box lined with plastic or paper. The two packaging are the only protection to prevent the bread from contaminants. Every time the vendor opens the box, the possibility of contamination with smoke, ash and butts is high. Imagine eating a cigarette contaminated bread, yuck! The very least that could happen is inhalation of harmful smoke.
3) If he can manage to smoke while selling food for human consumption. Then, he might not aware of good hygiene. His way of handling goods might be unsanitary. You might get some food borne diseases from the commodities. Playing safe is better than sorry.
