How to Make Tawa Tawa Tea for Dengue Treatment

I just heard the news from GMA 7 that tawa tawa weed can cure dengue fever and it was scientifically proven.

Tawa tawa herb looks like this.

I want that herb cause we have a three months old baby. This illness is very dangerous and can take lives if not treated immediately. I gonna find this herb soon and plant it in our garden.

According to my internet browser, this is how to make tawa tawa tea for dengue treatment.

Tea Making Procedures
•Take 5 to 6 full whole Tawa Tawa plants
•Cut off the roots
•Wash and clean
•Fill a boiling pot with clean water
•Boil the Tawa Tawa for one minute in a slow rolling boil
•Cool
•Let the dengue fever victim drink only the Tawa Tawa water for 24 hours
•Sip 1 to 1.5 glasses of Tawa Tawa water every hour

The internal hemorrhaging will stop and the dengue fever will be cured within 24 hours.

I better hurry. I want to evaluate the tea myself. I want to make it more drinkable if it tastes bad. Babies don’t want bad tasting stuff.

A day after I went outside my mother’s front yard and saw this plant. Finding this plant was an easy task.

tawa tawa on garden

I prepared a glass of tawa tawa tea just to know what it taste like.

preparing tawa tawa leaves

It has a little sweet and grassy taste. A little of muscovado sugar will make it more pleasant. It tastes better than sambong tea.

The Department of Health reported that tawa tawa might increase blood platelet count but they still need further studies.

Tawa-tawa contains active ingredients that may help dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) patients – study

Tawa-tawa (Euphorbia hirta), also known as “gatas-gatas,” is a hairy herb grown in open grasslands, roadsides and pathways. This indigenous plant is considered as one of the most popular folkloric treatment for dengue in the Philippines.

Intent on finding out the truth behind tawa-tawa’s curative properties, students of the University of Sto Tomas (UST) – Faculty of Pharmacy conducted a study entitled “Investigation of the anti-thrombocytopenic property of euphorbia hirta linn (Tawa-Tawa) decoction in rat models. The study aimedtoverify the effects of tawa-tawa decoction to a dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) patient showing a symptom of thrombocytopenia (low platelet count due to excessive bleeding).

In the study, the students used chloramphenicol, ethanol and heparin to induce thrombocytopenia on rat models, mimicking dengue hemorrhagic fever. They administered tawa-tawa decoction to the sample groups and collected blood samples to check for platelet count, bleeding time (duration of bleeding), and blood clotting times in several stages of the experiment.

Results showed that platelet count increased by 47% depending on the drug used to induce thrombocytopenia. Bleeding time was reduced up to 62% while blood clotting time decreased to 58% compared to the control groups.

Based on the results, students concluded that administering tawa-tawa decoction to animal models help improve their healing mechanism. Tawa-tawa was able to promote cell production, and prevents platelet destruction. Likewise, the improvement in the cell bleeding time and clotting time provided evidence that the indigenous plant can preserve and promote the hemostatic function of platelets.

The students also discovered phenolic compounds in tawa-tawa, active ingredients suspected to be responsible in the increased platelet counts of tested animals. In an interview, Mr. Ryan Justin Raynes, one of the student researchers saidthat through a phenolic determination assay, they were able to identify ‘minute’ phenolic compound in tawa-tawa samples. “Although there were small amount of phenolic compound in tawa-tawa, this was sufficient to exert effect promoting quality and quantity of platelets,” Mr. Raynes said.

Because of the study’s significant findings, it won the first prize in the PCHRD – Gruppo Medica Award held during the 6th Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) Week held at Sofitel Manila last 10 August 2012. PCHRD – Gruppo Medica Award is given to undergraduate students engaged in herbal medicine research that have potential for practical or commercial applications.

  • Hi! God is Good for creating TawaTawa! A New Zealander friend had fever starting July 25, 2013 -Thursday. She was worsening and was admitted to one of the premier hospitals in Metro Manila on July 30 ,Tuesday dawn. Blood tests were taken every 12 hours and her platelet count was low. She had Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever II. Dextrose was administered, no medicine given and blood tests were ran every 12 hours. Starting Tuesday night (July 30), I was her full time watcher, platelet count was around 110,000 then after another blood test, it became more or less 102,000, then on the next blood test it stil went further down to around 92,000. I was already much alarmed and so (without the doctor’s knowledge) I had her drink 1 glass of home-made tawatawa tea at 10 am then another glass at 1pm because her next blood test was at 5pm, July 31, Wednesday. The result of the 5pm blood test was her platelet count rose to 106,000. I let her drink another glass in the evening. The next day-Aug 1 Thursday- 5AM blood test showed 128,000. The entire day of Aug 1, I had her drink a total of 4 glasses of tawatawa(1 glass at 10am, 1pm, 5pm, 8pm) and of course 1 glass of purified water alternately since increase fluid intake was prescribed. Her next blood test on Aug 2 (Friday) 5AM showed a normal platelet count of 208,000 and she was discharged 11AM on the same day. In summary, she had Dengue fever for 5days then was admitted to the hospital for only 3 and a half days with the help of tawatawa…. Thanks to tawatawa, nutritious food, proper rest and increase fluid intake. Thanks be to God for creating TawaTawa… God is worthy of all praise, thanksgiving and obedience to His Commanments! =)

    • I was once told by my cousin, a doctor in Manila Sanitarium hospital that capsules and tea are available in the market. I’ll get back to you as soon as I find the store selling them.

    • Was told that Tawatawa capsule is available in Quiapo area. If you have any relatives nearby Manila, better ask them. I am in Bataan area unfortunately.

  • my 8 month old daughter has dengue now. today is her 4th day of fever. we gave her tawa tawa today but added sugar. she wont drink it if its not sweetened.. will the tawa tawa still work. i hope you can immediately reply because it is driving me crazy. i feel so helpless.

    • I know the feelings. I wish someone else who have had experience about sweetened tawa-tawa could reply to you first hand. But, sweetened tawa-tawa compared to nothing at all is still better in my own opinion. I hope and pray she recovers. God bless.

  • Thanks to websites like this. My 19 year old son suffered from Dengue for 5 days before I found a cure. I’ve searched the internet for “Dengue cure” and this website came up also. His platelet count was steadily going down. As soon as I’ve read about this, I immediately boiled and prepared 3 liters of tawa tawa. My son was at the time confined in a hospial and we were very much worried because we knew for a fact that this dengue is a killer. It was 3.5 hours before his scheduled time of platelet lab test that I made my son took few glasses before the lab test. I was amazed and thanked the good Lord that my son’s platelet finally rose up. It was a sudden change from the 5 days it’s been steadily going down. His fever subsided in 24 hours and 48 hours from the time he started drinking tawa tawa juice, he was made to check out from hospital confinement. God is good. For a killer dengue virus, he spread this common herb cure that can easily be found almost everywhere.

    • Tama ka sa komento mo…mga mukhang pera kasi mga doctor. pag wla ka pera pampagamot, babalewalain ka nila

  • Thank you for this post. As a last resort, you can buy dried tawa tawa are available at Quiapo where you buy herbal medicine. However, it really just grows everywhere. You have to be patient to find huge areas that are growing weeds. In our case we sometimes find them in the island in the middle of recto and often in residential compounds in quezon city where there are untended grassy patches outside the houses. Its hard to plant in your backyard though, its resilient but hard to domesticate and make sure you get the right herb. Try to choose more mature plants to harvest, don’t pull the young plants, somebody else may need them in the future.

In our preparation, we include the roots, wash the plant and cut the plant into 3 inches long pieces before boiling. The dagta inside the stems are where the medicinal properties come from and cutting makes it easier to disperse in the boiling water.

It will taste gross if it is not washed well. Usually it tastes sweet like corn with a little light bitter taste but tolerable. I’ve seen dozens of people get well. But we never discourage hospitalization.

Also don’t drink it while hot. So that the temperature will not cause more internal bleeding by burning.

Thanks to God!

  • Hi Melody,

From which area are you? Tawa Tawa usually grows near makahiya plant/weed. Look for grassy places in your area, it grows abundantly. Hope the photo of Tawa Tawa helps you identify the plant easily

  • I just want to know where to buy that plant mostr of the kids here on my neighborhood is in danger.

    • You just need to get some tawa-tawa plants….

  • tawa tawa is good, but CHLORELLA SOROKINIAN(cryptomonadales)IS BETTER, A WELL RESEARCH PRODUCT CONDUCTED BY THE NATIONAL HEALTH RESEARCH INSTITUTE AND TESTED BY INDONISIAN RESEARCHERS AS CURE FOR DENGUE. IF YOU WANT THIS PRODUCT JUST EMAIL TO bal_bantilan@ yahoo.com ot txt to 0909-672-4976…

    • THAT SOUNDS GOOD BECAUSE IN INDONESIA THEY CONDUCTED MEDICAL AND SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND MADE FINDINGS… UNLIKE TAWA-TAWA IN THE PHILIPPINES, THERE IS NO FACTUAL AND SCIENTIFIC FINDINGS BEING PUBLISHED BY OUR AUTHORITY, RATHER, ITS MORE ON ACTUAL EXPERIENCE, WHICH SOME MAY FEEL HESITANT TO USE TAWA-TAWA… THAT’S WHY U CONCLUDED THAT CHLORELLA IS BETTER THAN TAWA-TAWA…

  • those vendors under the overpass of commonwealth is selling tawa tawa, I got mine when I do networking in montalban and I brought it home ,planted it flower pots, this week I help 2 neighbors who has dengue, and thank God those children was healed, sorry nakalbo ang tawatawa ko. pero I still have more seedlings got it from Quezon city circle doon sa parking lot last monday marami pa doon kaya lang malilit pa.

  • Yes,we have been using tawa tawa for two years. It saved the lives of my niece and my nephew last year who almost died of dengue. Actually, in our community, anyone who is inflicted with dengue gets to drink tawatawa until he gets better. I highly recommend this. If you are looking for some, you can find lots of it on the grassy land going to Mall of Asia or near Cultural Center of the Philippines. That’s where we always get our bunch of tawatawa.

    • Thanks for the info…really a big help for all!

  • A son of dear friends of ours had dengue for almost a week now. His platelet went below 100. So we asked him to drink tawa-tawa. He drank about 1 pitcher of tawa-tawa tea, and religiously drank the whole night. The next day he was discharged from the hospital. Bumalik na sa normal platelet level nya. So to DOH and the medical practitioners in our country, how can you dispense with these positive results? Bilis-bilisan nyo na ang ‘further studies’ nyo. Ilang taon na naming narinig yan sa nyo?

    • Who knows? It is possible (DOH) someone there is conniving with a pharmaceutical company which is now making a drug made up of tawatawa but will claim made from other ingredients. It’s a big business out there. Not millions but billions. Anyone would buy an expensive drug for as long as it would save lives.

  • “sore eyes” sorry typo error

  • i remember when i was a child that we used tawa-tawa milk to cure our sure eyes after an hour it’s cured. Amazing then it can cure dengue.. I suggest also to study baho-baho plants, this is our emergency medicine when we have diarhea, severe stomache ache, etc. It too much effective.

Nid kz namin mlaman..yung baby nmin one years old me dengue

    • I am sorry! My place is too far from Quiapo to confirm your inquiry. Please compare it to picture provided. Choose fresh herb as much as possible to avoid fakes.

It is still best to bring her to hospital together with the tawa tawa medication.

    • Try to have some trip going to Laguna or cavite area, just to make sure you can find tawa-tawa for your baby.

  • We have a lot of these herbs growing in our garden. My mother used to extract its juice to use as eyedrops for sore eyes when my sister had one. it cured her in 2 days. I’m sure this is helpful in some others diseases. It would be nice if this will not be so commercialized so it could help a lot of people especially the indigents. Anyone who need help on this, i would be very glad to give you the plant. It comes now in tablet and capsule forms but i still believe in the natural one.

  • proven and tested by me a few years ago, I was cured by tawa tawa and i recommend it to anyone…there might be people in our government who strongly disagree with these but guys…even in scientific research there’s no specific cure of dengue that’s what i have read even here in the net….it’s bcoz they don’t aknowlegde tawa2x…it’s just around the corner all you have to do is boil, let it cool and drink it like water, You don’t need to spend. people in our government runs business…nobody will spend for a medicine if they all people would know tawa2x could really cure dengue…right????

  • That is true about tawa tawa can cure a dengue victim… Good herbal medicine…

    • Thanks Doc for the confirmation!

    • Thanks for the comment Dr. James Earl…it would be a great help for all esp. like us dont have a lot of money.

    • tnx doc james bihira kasi sa mga doctor ang naniniwala sa herbal medicine
