Using Home Kitchen as Food Processing Area

Kitchen, a place where the daily dose of foods are cooked. In modern houses, it is also the place where the family come together to eat an converse. This also might be the place where your income generating hobby starts.

Start by cooking adobo, paela, pinakbet, menudo and kare-kare. Offer them for sale to your neighbors, relatives, boss and officemates. Sell it in garage. If all becomes favorable, the small venture can be turned to a karenderia, full blown restaurant or a catering service.

If food service is not your type, then venture to a full pledge manufacturing. Prepare preserved goods like, fruit jams, candies, cheese, yogurt, marshmallows, ground coffee and instant teas. Market it to neighbors, relatives, friends and officemates. Join various food exhibits to gain more markets – dealers and retailers. Then move to a new processing plant when the demand volume skyrocketed.

However, there are few things that must be considered. These are mostly for the sake of food safety.

1) It must be clean and well maintained.
2) No rodents, cockroaches and flies. Those are carriers of harmful organisms and other contaminants.
3) Kitchen must be made of easy to clean materials, e.g. ceramic tiles and stainless steel lavatory.
4) The comfort room should not be in close proximity to kitchen. The purpose is to prevent cross contamination.
5) No other persons are allowed to enter the area during the processing operation, except those who are directly involved.
6) Think of countermeasures if a neighbor do a painting job, health officers do fogging to exterminate mosquitoes, somebody burned a truck tire nearby, etc..It might ruin the prepared foods.
7) The necessary permits. Does your area allowed selling of homemade foods? You might need barangay and business permits from the very start.
