Side Effects of DEHP bis(2-ethyhexyl) phthalate From PVC Plastics

I already have several topics about the bisphenol a. It is a hormone disrupting substance that might cause bad effects such as reproductive problems, birth defects and autism.

Most hard platics contain bisphenol a. Identification is easy, all plastics with recycling symbol of seven should be avoided. In absence of symbol, press the plastic with hand. You should suspect it contain BPA if it is hard. The safe polypropylene plastic is soft and has a code symbol number five.

The primary plastic product of concern is baby’s feeding bottles. Baby’s immune system is still weak. The effects are expected to be high.

All of my baby’s feeding bottles are polypropylene (PP, code 5). I inspected all our plastic wares. Almost all of them are PP. I planned to dumped all code 7 wares. pp polypropylene code 5

According to studies, avoiding code 7 plastic wares and canned foods have significant effects in reduction of body’s bisphenol a content. The polymer does not stay long in body system but avoidance is still necessary.

A lot of tin cans have epoxy linings. Bisphenol a are used to make such linings.

In addition to BPA there is another hazardous chemical that leach out from plastic products. It is the DEHP or bis(2-ethyhexyl) phthalate. The substance is also linked to reproductive and health issues. Found in PVC plastics with the recycling symbol of three. Now we have two types of plastic to avoid the PVC and those with bisphenol a (carbonates).

PVC are use for making food trays, cling film and mineral water. Most of the bottles drinking water of today use PET.

Intake of DEHP causes the following symptoms:

1) Significant amount of DEHP in blood of pregnant women is associated with child’s decrease penis size, short anogenital distance and incomplete descent of testes. The same results are found in test animals.

2) High levels might cause obesity and diabetics.

3) Intake of large amount cause acute toxicity. Lethal dose in rats is 30g/kg. Quantity of 24g/kg on rabbit skin will cause death.

4) Might cause heart problems.
